How to Decorate Your Son's Room Quickly and Easily
73Enjoy decorating your boy's room! It needn't be complicated or time-consuming. Parents of boys quickly find out that the available selection of room decor, clothing, shoes, and other trends for boys lag very much in second place variety-wise behind those for girls. Luckily, there are plenty of ways you can still customize your little man's room to make it look great and reflect his interests.
The fastest and easiest ways to update your son's room are bedding, rugs and wall art. Here we'll find out how to bring these items together to create a great new look.
Popular decorating themes for a boy's room
- Solid color (e.g. 1, 2 or 3-color combo)
- Vehicles (e.g. race cars, construction, trains)
- Sports (e.g. a specific sport or team)
- Pirates
- Animals
- Beach or surf
- Superheroes
- Outer space
- Under the sea
- Hunting
- Fishing
- Aviation
- Dinosaurs
Bedding
Bedding makes the biggest instant impact the moment you walk into any bedroom; your boy's room is no exception. If you're on a budget, try your local discount stores for a great duvet in solid colors or a fun design. You may wish to steer clear of the licensed character products unless your son is into them; such busy designs can get difficult to color-coordinate and can look dated in a few years.
On the other hand, if you'd like the occasion to splurge, you'll absolutely love the high quality boy's-only bedding available at Just Boy's Bedding; there is plenty of choice and you can even shop by theme! If he's into dinosaurs, you'll be able to find dinosaur bedding there. Or sports, pirate, cars, or almost any other theme you can think of.
Whichever route you go, you needn't feel compelled to buy other precisely matching room extras like drapes, lampshades etc. However, for those who like a totally matched-up look, these extras are often available as options when purchasing higher-budget bedding.
Rugs
A rug is a fantastic way to continue expressing your boy's interests and enthusiasms or just to create a professionally pulled-together look in his room. Local home improvement stores and discount stores are great places to find a rug for less. Or if you have a more specific look in mind, try the fantastic selection and wide price range available in the boy's section of the House of Area Rugs website.
Boy's rugs these days needn't necessarily be solid-color or 'grown-up' looking, for example there are rugs designed with street patterns as a playing surface for toy cars, surfboard shaped rugs, car themed rugs, educational rugs, and plenty more.
Wall art
Wall art is great for adding an extra touch to your boy's room that makes it uniquely his. If you're on a tight budget, you can cut out a calendar picture and frame it with an inexpensive frame from your local dollar store or discount store. Because calendars usually have a theme, you can just as easily create a set of 3 or 4 related art pieces that way and arrange them stylishly on the wall.
For a more middle-of-the-road approach, browse framed prints or posters in your local craft or discount home decorator store.
Or if you'd like to splurge and want something 100% original, consider commissioning a picture from a local artist; whether they are established or just getting started this can be an exciting route for you to go. You can find an artist and examine their existing styles at local art or craft fairs and at some farmer's markets. Some public libraries also display the work of local artists and their contact information.
Putting it all together
- You can keep the theme looking its best without repeating the exact same thing each time everywhere. For example, if your sporty boy is into basketball, you needn't repeat an image of a basketball on the bedding, rug and the wall art. Instead, it can look more savvy to have the basketball image on just the bedding, consider a more general orange and black rug for color-coordination, and finally add a poster of your son's favorite basketball player on the wall. Or for a pirate theme, try pirate-themed bedding, a black or red-and-white striped rug evoking a pirate ship's sail, and a treasure map picture on the wall.
- Think a few years ahead when you decorate your son's room so he won't grow out of the design too early. For example, a light blue fluffy rug and a teddy bear theme may seem adorable to you for your little toddler's first move into a 'big boy bed', but he may find this decor babyish a year or two down the track. (On the other hand, if you don't mind re-decorating frequently, this could be a great way to keep up with his interests!)
- Ultimately, remember that it is his room, not yours. If your little man wants a theme that isn't something you'd pick, or wishes to bring together totally unrelated designs in the same room, consider letting him do it (unless it's over budget or could seem offensive). Your boy's room should reflect his interests, not yours! Remember, you're decorating his room to make his space comforting and fun for him, and of course to show him you care.

Giselle, you are welcome.
Hi Giselle,
Glad to read this awesome post! A Good suggestion for every Mom, and I loved the wall art concept, its too good....
Cheers
Navya.
What great ideas. We have moved twice in 18 months and had to decorated my son's room both times! Luckily, second time around meant learning from the first mistakes.
We kept the walls plain (blue on one, red the adjacent then the rest white) so we could accessorize as he gets older.
Rugs are a great idea and keep the room warm, so we may invest in something. Wall art is also good. My son has the planets along his wall which is effective. He loves polar bears too, so I have cut out his old calender and used those as pictures.
Good advice - voting up.
