If motivation for running is an issue for you, this article will help you fix it. This article is designed for beginner or near beginner runners, or those who have taken a significant break from running and want to get back into it.

Find out your running personality by taking the fun quiz below (it doesn’t actually have questions on running!) and get personalized suggestions for how to motivate yourself to run.

These motivational techniques for the different personalities are not mutually exclusive, so if you wish you can actually implement all of them together. However, to prevent getting overwhelmed it may be best to start with those which correspond to your personality.

Find out your running personality now by taking this fun quiz!

If you are a Fast Mover type...

No surprises here - you like to move fast! You’re not someone who enjoys waiting patiently, whether it be at a traffic light or for dinner to be ready. You’re often a competitive type of person.

The good news is that you will find it easy to motivate yourself to run. Why? Running involves moving fast down the street - which is your specialty. So while you’re running, think of yourself as driving on a highway: look at that walker up ahead… gotta pass that walker! The more practice you do, the better you’ll get and the faster you’ll become! Remind yourself that running is in keeping with your natural personality style, unlike slower sports such as walking or tai chi. You are definitely someone who would benefit from competing in a running race (think of all the people you’ll get to pass!)

The Fast Mover type is somewhat similar to the Measurable Goals type of runner. You may also benefit from some of the strategies listed for the Measurable Goals personality.

Summary for Fast Mover type

  • Think of yourself as driving on a highway when running. Look for opportunities to pass people.
  • Remind yourself that training allows you to become faster and faster
  • Find an upcoming race to in which to compete (e.g. 5K fun run)
  • Check out strategies for the Measurable Goals type of runner

Mantra while running: “I like to move fast - that’s just how I move. This is my natural style in life. So it’s good that I’m running and not walking.”

If you are a Reclaim Childhood Fun person...

You’re a fun-loving, not overly serious type of person. You may also have a relaxed, laid-back personality. You are probably not super-competitive. Running sounds daunting to you as an adult, because it seems like a lot of work and too many rules! To motivate yourself with this personality type, think back to your childhood. You probably really enjoyed running when it was just a fun mode of getting from A to B, or when it involved games or activities.

Well then, reclaim that childhood fun! Tell yourself you are running because you are doing something fun, not solely because your exercise regime says you Must Run Today. Take a big flying leap over the curb when crossing the road even though an ordinary stride is all that’s needed. Run where it’s fun, or just plain interesting… like in a park, or around a big church building or do a circuit within visual distance of railway tracks so you can have the fun of seeing a train go by during your running training. Do be sure your fun-loving personality doesn’t put you in danger though - keep to safe, well-lit areas. Reclaim your childhood by running!

Summary for the Reclaim Childhood Fun person

  • Find fun things to enjoy about the scenery as you run.
  • Be a kid at heart! For example, leap up over the curb when crossing.
  • Vary your running route as much as possible, making it more like ‘play’ than ‘work’

Mantra while running: “Running around was fun back in my childhood. This minute, I’m running so I can have fun with it and keep myself young.”

Want to know how far you’ve run?

You can calculate distance very easily online by Google Maps Pedometer, an interactive route calculator which lets you ‘draw’ the route you took and then calculates the distance for you.

Not so computer-savvy? Then try this easy step-by-step tutorial on how to use Google Maps Pedometer.

If you are the Measurable Goals type...

You like to have distinct aims and goals to achieve. Your personality type tends to be good at quantifying anything and everything, often doing it almost unconsciously (e.g. “nearly halfway there”). The good news is that because numbers and goals mean a lot to you, you will have an easy time motivating yourself to run.

In this case, you will want to keep track of your route as you run, and wear a watch when running. Note down your total time and your distance after each run (see inset box to determine your distance). You’ll get a lot of satisfaction from seeing yourself go longer distances in less time.

If it’s still hard to motivate yourself, try the same route every time but go just a little bit further each session. This gives you a distinct and straightforward goal to reach and accomplish.

Sign up for an upcoming race, for example a 5K Fun Run; this gives you a medium-term goal for which to aim. When training for a race, be certain to try both flat and hilly terrain.

Summary for a Measurable Goals person

  • Keep track of your stats (time and distance) each time you run
  • Go the same route but just a little further each time: increase your distance for a sense of on-the-go achievement
  • Sign up for an upcoming race (e.g. 5K run run) to keep your training on track

Mantra while running: “I know exactly what goal I want to achieve today on my run and I’m going to do it!”

If you have a Social personality type....

You enjoy hanging out with friends and family. Being around other people energizes you, and you tend to get bored quickly if you’re on your own. Your personality type is typically upbeat and well-liked. This can make it hard to motivate yourself to run if you’re exercising alone. The obvious solution is to involve friends and family.

The most ideal situation for you is to get a running partner and go running together: this may be a friend, your boyfriend/girlfriend, or a family member. However, this is not always practical. If you can’t find anyone whose schedule is similar to yours to run together, there are still ways in which you can involve family and friends in your running. One of these is to inform others about your new hobby of running and encourage them to ask you about it - this motivates you to run by keeping you accountable to people you like.

Another way to involve others socially in your running is by signing up for an upcoming Fun Run (e.g. a 5K) and ask them to be your ‘support crew’ and come watch you do the race, or at least watch you go through the finish line. Knowing that they will be doing this will motivate you to run now so that you do a creditable job on the race which they are coming to watch you finish. As an added bonus, you’ll get to meet other runners in your area at a local 5K run.

Summary for the Social person

  • Find someone to train with
  • Tell friends and family about your new hobby to help you hold yourself accountable
  • Ask friends and family to be your ‘support crew’ in an upcoming Fun Run

Mantra while running: “Running is fun and healthy and gives me something extra to talk about with other people.”

Conclusion

Don't just generally try to motivate yourself to run; instead get better success when you use these motivational methods targeted especially to your own characteristics. Running is fun when you gear it to your personality!

I took the quiz and I'm a measurable goals type. The last question I ended up choosing the beach even though I'm not a beach person-my ideal vacation is exploring museums and local architecture.

Well organized, well presented, and great apt pics. Walking/jogging in the morning, in a park specially, is the best way to start your day, in my opinion. I love the music of morning - the birds, the fresh smell of flowers, the subtle colors - its beautiful.

Giselle, I couldn't exactly co-relate to the personality types here, but I think for someone like me, the pleasant morning walk/run could be motivating because I get most of my ideas in the morning! Any creativity I have is on a high at the hour of sunrise and if I'm surrounded by inspiring things like flowers, birds, greenery - I can make the most of that time :)

Hi Flora, thanks for taking the quiz! It was of course inspired by your detective fiction quiz. I found it lots of fun taking your quiz, so I tried to make mine fun for readers too. Sorry about the lack of suitable choices for the vacation question... I may even add in your suggestion about museums/architecture as one of the choices (for some reason I couldn't think of any other options when I was writing that question!) I think an extra option in that last question will enhance the quiz, and if you noticed the lack of a suitable option, others probably will too. Thanks for your ideas and input and for taking the time to do the quiz.

Hi Anusha, thanks for your kind words. And sorry you didn't see a personality type that meshed with you. From what you have said, I am thinking of maybe adding in another personality type along the lines of what you said: someone who is creatively inspired by nautral surroundings.

In fact, I may quite possibly be of that type myself, since the idea and tips in this article were all developed by me while running! However in my case I don't think the surroundings mattered as much as the fact of running - because I was running late at night when it was mostly dark. Thanks for bringing forward some valuable ideas here for me to think about and hopefully apply. And I appreciate that you liked the pics - they were a last-minute decision actually, so I'm glad I did that in the end!

I was happy to see your hub pop up in my notifications email because of where I am in my "running life" right now. I just did my first 5k on 9/11 (my sister, fellow hubber Denise Handlon wrote a hub on our separate but coinciding first 5k run experiences - check it out).

I decided I would do a few more that I could find that are on Sundays b/c I work Saturdays. I thought my next one was Oct 16 but realized last night it was this coming Sun. I had to force myself to get off the couch to do a run but I did it.

I took your quiz (first time I've ever seen one in a Hub - great idea) and am a Fast Mover with Measurable Goals tendencies. I'll have to keep that in mind as I practice for this next 5k.

Giselle:

What about the anti-social personality? The driving on a freeway analogy is good unless you live in Dallas. Most of these people don't have any sense to start with. Put them behind the wheel of a car and they turn into super morons. Their IQs drop even further when the weather is bad. I guess that's why treadmills were invented. Great hub. Voted up and useful.

Hi Danette, thanks for commenting, and I'm thrilled to hear of your running. I found that participating in a 5K is a fun and exhilarating experience, espcially if you are running for a cause, which sounds like you were from the date of your 5K run. I never realized your sister is hubber Denise Handlon! I will definitely have to read her hub on both of your 5k running experiences.

And thanks so much for taking the quiz! I'm glad to hear of your running personality. Like I said in the hub, none of the suggestions are actually mutually exclusive so if you're ever in need of extra motivation feel free to pick and choose techniques from the other personalities as they appeal.

Best wishes for your upcoming 5K run!

Hi Tammy, I definitely enjoy your quirky sense of humor! You always bring a fun and interesting perspective to what you write, whether it be a comment or a hub. Yes, I think I've actually seen the anti-social running personality out in action - a jogger nearly 'mowed down' an old lady walking on the sidewalk, when he could have easily detoured temporarily around her on the grassy area to pass, as I had done.

This article has great info. Like many i was an avid athlete in my youth(wrestling/running),now i barely have enough motivation to get through a day of work without flopping right down on the couch when i get home. But i must add i lost 20lbs last 3 months from eating whole foods.so exercise is coming back into the picture soon.

Giselle Maine profile image

Giselle Maine Hub Author 7 months ago

Thanks for reading my article. Yes, we all tend to change our exercise habits a lot as we get older (probably because work takes up such a lot of weekly time, too). The good news is that from reading your hubs, I get the impression that you do a lot of very active work of home improvements and repairs. So you are probably already getting more exercise in your work day than the average person. Of course, the more exercise the better - the doctor said for an average healthy person it should be at least 30 mins a day. I admit don't always achieve that (although I did 1 hour yesterday!) and I do try to make the exercise enjoyable. In fact, I composed most of most of this hub in my head while I was out running.

It was great to hear that eating whole foods helped a lot for you. Congratulations on the 20 lbs, that's really awesome!

What a great hub. Love the quiz. I'm a social, and I do have a running buddy - my dog Lucy. She motivates me to go running because she loves it so much. She's beside herself with excitement whenever she sees me pull out the running shoes.

Giselle Maine profile image

Giselle Maine Hub Author 6 months ago

Hi Deborah, what a wonderful idea - a pet as a running companion! I can see how this would work out well for you as a social person: you're not running alone, AND your dog Lucy gets her exercise. It sounds like you have a win-win situation going there! And thank you for answering my question about the Jasmine rice on your hub. I look forward to trying out your recipe hubs!

Wow, Giselle, you have really broken down the psychology of running personalities! You had me pegged. I am not a runner, but many of my friends are - sun, rain, hot, cold - they have to run. It is an addiction to them. I love the idea, but I have never gotten the hang of it. I do love to speed walk, and I do love having lots of visual things on my route. A confession, though, I have not been able to make speed walking a habit either. I need to get on it. Loved the hub and the quiz widget. Voted up, useful, awesome, and interesting!! I am Facebooking this one, too. My girlfriends are going to love reading about their running personalities.

Hi Sholland, I'm so glad you had lots of fun with the quiz here! I am thrilled with your votes and ESPECIALLY with the Facebooking - I love it when people find my articles interesting enough to Facebook or Tweet (it doesn't happen very often and is always exciting for me when it does!) I hope your friends also have fun taking the quiz. I was inspired to write this quiz when I was out running! It took several sessions of jogging for the whole thing to come together in my head, but it did make the running lots more fun.

About your speed walking, it's great that you are doing it. Remember to focus on the positives (e.g. "I speed-walked TWICE this week, yay!" instead of the negatives "I only speed-walked twice this week"). Focusing on the positives will have you coming back for more. And of course, ANY amount of speed-walking is better than none! Best wishes - winter is not the easiest or safest season for outdoor exercise. Don't feel bad if you have to switch to indoor-style exercises during the winter - when it is below freezing point it can just be plain unsafe out there. But there is still a bit of the more mellow fall weather left before winter hits! Thanks so much for taking the time to stop by and comment.

I think it is positive any time I exercise since I'm not very consistent. Maybe one day I will get that addiction bug my friends have caught. For a while I was speed walking and/or exercising with my Wii. I love wearing a pedometer to compete with myself, too. :-)

Giselle Maine profile image

Giselle Maine Hub Author 6 months ago

Hi Sholland, sounds like you are on the right track with your speed walking! Exercising with a Wii is a great idea, so is wearing a pedometer when speed walking. Thanks for these neat tips, I am sure other readers will benefit from your ideas also.

It's great that your friends enjoy being so active with their running. (Of course, those for whom running is already an addiction may not need the motivational tips in this article! - however, they may have a lot of fun taking the running personality quiz to find out more about themselves)

What a fun article. I took the quiz and was the "Reclaim Childhood Fun" person which at first I didn't think was accurate. However,I actually found the tips in this section very helpful so maybe the quiz is more accurate than I first thought. I'm going to get back into running. I've just had a baby so need to get fit again. Will definitely be putting these tips into action to help me. Thanks!

Giselle Maine profile image

Giselle Maine Hub Author 6 months ago

Hi Lou, and thanks for taking the time to give feedback. Congratulations on your new baby!! I found it can be a challenge to find the time to exercise when you have a new baby. There may even be 'stroller strides' classes in your area (for moms and new babies to get fit). But running works well, so long as you can fit it in with your child's schedule. I found brisk stroller walking worked well for me at losing the baby weight and regaining fitness. If you have just had a baby you won't want to do too much all at once.

About the running quiz, I'm glad you found the tips in your section helpful. But as mentioned in the quiz, all the tips can be done together, so if there is a personality type that you would normally feel is a better fit for you, try adding in the tips from that section too. Thanks for stopping by and congratulations on your baby!
