How to Use the Amazon Capsule in Hubpages: a step-by-step guide

By Giselle Maine

The Amazon capsule in Hubpages makes it possible for you to feature products on your hub that readers may want to buy. When a reader orders a featured item via your hubpage, you get a percentage of the item's price; so you'll need to have an Amazon Affiliate ID before you get started.

Here we'll go through how to use the Amazon capsule step by step. This capsule is fairly self-explanatory so computer-savvy users may prefer to try it out on their own. However, if you'd like some extra guidance complete with illustrations, you've come to the right place!

Step 2

Step 1. (This step only needs to be done once, ever). If you haven't already, create an Amazon Affiliate account and link your affiliate ID to your Hubpages account. That whole process is already explained in detail here on the Hubpages FAQ.

Step 2. Go in to edit your hub, and add a new Amazon capsule to it as shown in the picture on the right.

Step 3. Then go to the Amazon capsule you just made, click 'edit' and you'll come up with a screen that tells you to choose one of two possible ways to use it: specific products or keywords (shown in picture below). Each option has its own pros and cons. First I'll explain how to do it via the keyword option, then I'll explain how to do the specific products option.

Step 3
Step 3

The 'Keywords' option in detail

Step 4 Option A. Using Keywords: Select the 'choose keywords' button and you will get a screen that looks like the one in the picture below.

Step 4 Option A - keywords
Step 4 Option A - keywords

Example - keywords method

For those who like examples, I've shown in pictures below how to do one with the keywords 'party board game' (for example, for a hub about hosting a dinner party evening). You can enter a subtitle on the top - the subtitle doesn't have any effect on the products; it just becomes the header for that capsule on your hub.

Then just type in the keywords for products you want it to come up with, select number of products you want it to show and then hit 'Preview Amazon Results'. It's as simple as that! When you're done playing around with your keywords, just hit 'save' and your capsule will appear in your hub.

Example using keywords

Below is the finished example in real Amazon capsule form.  Note: the actual capsule auto-updates over time, so the two products you see here might be different from the original ones seen above when the capsule was first created.

The 'Specific Product' option in detail

Step 4 Option B: Using Specific Products. If you'd like more control over the exact products that get featured than you can get with keyword method, then this is the way to go. First, open your Amazon capsule and hit the 'choose specific products' button. It will look like the picture below.

Step 4 Option B: specific products
Step 4 Option B: specific products

Example - specific products

Again, I'm showing in picture format how to do this with specific products, in this case, we'll look at party board games again. Suppose I want my hub to show the games 'Bananagrams' and 'Pictionary' then I'd look in Amazon for those products, copy in the URLs for these, and then my Amazon capsule is complete!

Then, open a separate web browser window and go to the Amazon website and look for the products you want. For each product you found in Amazon, just copy the URL from the top of the Amazon browser window and paste it into one of the spaces provided in your Amazon capsule. Then hit 'Preview Amazon Results'. Voila! When you're done with your capsule, just hit 'save'.

Conclusion

The Amazon capsule is a lot faster and easier than it sounds! Beginners shouldn't agonize too much over how to do it. Refer to the text or the examples here if need be, but otherwise just play around on your own with the capsule. Remember, if something goes wrong you can always delete the capsule and then start over with a fresh one. Remember also that you can be creative and re-arrange your Amazon capsule where you want it on your hubpage, just like any other capsule.

Have fun selecting your Amazon keywords or products - you'll soon find that working with the Amazon capsule is one of the most enjoyable parts of hubbing!

Extra hints for Amazon capsules

  • The Amazon capsule isn't allowed as the first (i.e. topmost) full-width capsule on a hub.
  • You can list 1 Amazon product for every 50 (or more) words you have in the hub. So for example if your hub is 200 words long, you can feature 1, 2, 3 or 4 Amazon products, but not 5 or more.

Thanks, JS Matthew! I was definitely trying to make every step clear. I actually made this hub in response to a question asked of me by a hubber who is a fantastic writer that requested extra guidance on the mechanics of the Amazon capsule. Then I realized these instructions work equally well for *any* beginner, whether new to Hubpages or just to its Amazon capsule.

Thanks for taking the time to comment and for your positive response, it's much appreciated!

This is extremely helpful to me - a beginner who wasn't sure how to get the advertising onto my page. I thought I would just join Amazon, and it would magically appear (ha)! Thank you so much!

Hi,

Informative hub. I was searching for this information. However, I would like to know how to place an amazon capsule within the text. I mean to the right portion of the text. I have seen few hubs with that design. However, I am not able to find how to do that. I can only place the amazon capsule below or above the text.

Can you help me with that?

Hi Suvitharoja, yes I can help. Go in to edit your hub. On the right (just under the bit where you can click to insert a new capsule) is another box that says things like 'settings, summary, tags, reorder'. Click on 'reorder'. You will then see a bunch of rectangles come up there (these are like mini-versions of the capsules you used in your hub). If you want to place the amazon capsule to the right of the text, simply double-click on the mini rectangle that says 'amazon'. Then look at your hub on the left - you'll see that your Amazon capsule has moved off to the right of your text.

HINT: First move your Amazon capsule *immediately above* the capsule that you want it to be on the right of. THEN, do the double-click. But, if you find your Amazon capsule doesn't look good where you put it, just double-click on it again and it will become centered again. (Sometimes I find have to play around with moving it to different positions until I am satisfied that my layout looks good).

Thanks for stopping by and commenting. I hope I have answered your question well, but if there's anything that's not clear, just let me know and I'd be happy to help.

Hi Giselle,

Thank you for this information. I tried this for one of my hub and got it right. Now I have to play around and see which position best suits each hub.

Hi Giselle, I don't know if you're already planning, or if you've already written a hub about it, but I would have loved to read pros and cons of both options (keyword and URL) in your opinion.

I enjoy the Amazon capsules too, A great guide for beginners.

Hi Anusha, thanks for commenting and for your great idea about pros and cons of keyword vs URL. It would be such a neat topic for a hub. I will start writing that soon. Thanks for your inspiration!
