The Boys of Tech for the best in tech talk
What it is:
Simultaneously hip and informative, The Boys of Tech is a free weekly audio update on technology news in round-table commentary style. This podcast is fast becoming trendy with young college students and older tech executives alike.
Episodes are intriguingly entitled from a phrase actually used within that episode. From the captivating "One ginormous vice" to the descriptive "Biodegradable retaining walls" to the unusual-to-say-the-least "There's a shark in the street", it's easy to see the broad appeal of this show. Each of these roundtable analysis episodes are ad-free, last around 30 to 60 minutes and cover about six or seven different things happening over the past week.
Who they are:
Hosted by friends Edwin Hermann and Brett King along with newer co-host Cameron Collie, The Boys of Tech get together each week to record this podcast. They inject plenty of depth and perspective to each topic (and humor; check out the 'bloopers' section at the end of the show). The Boys of Tech have a track record of snagging some interesting guests to interview, such as Matt Stewart, the guy who released his novel (The French Revolution) via Twitter, in 140-character chunks; as a result of his publishing stunt he finally attracted a publisher and is now signed. Another notable interviewee is David Frampton, a New Zealand software developer who had the highest selling iPhone game called Chopper 2.
Whenever possible, significant world events are covered from a tech angle. Recorded in Wellington, New Zealand, the international flavor of this podcast has garnered listeners all over the world ever since this tech news commentary began in early 2009. The Boys of Tech adjust for international differences; one example is their effort to provide any measurements in both metric and US units.
Is it for you?
As a useful bonus, this up-to-the-minute show works for you by doing double duty as a handy heads-up for party conversation starters. Whether you find yourself attending cocktail parties or if you simply enjoy casual get-togethers in mixed groups, the Boys of Tech podcast delivers topics of equal interest to both genders (move over, sports and movies!) On the other hand, not everyone will go for this podcast: if your grandmother isn't yet aware of the difference between a Bluetooth and a Blu-ray, then this show probably isn't for her.
Whether you choose to listen during that long commute, gym workout, or just at the computer, you'll find the latest episode published each Monday morning on the Boys of Tech web site. You can also subscribe for free through iTunes or with any other podcast aggregator software. Regardless of how you listen, it's a fun and free way to keep on top of tech developments.
